Advertising in The Carmel Pine Cone

Thank you being interested in advertising in The Carmel Pine Cone, which was founded in 1915 and is Carmel and the Monterey Peninsula's most respected source for local news.

Our weekly circulation is 18,000 copies in print and 24,000 copies distributed to subscribers by email. All advertising appears simultaneously in the print and email editions. The Pine Cone is distributed on Thursday evenings to our email subscribers around the world and is delivered in print throughout the Monterey Peninsula, including home delivery in Pebble Beach, on Friday mornings.

Display advertising is priced according to size. Lower prices are available for bulk or frequency advertising run under contract. You may contact one of our account executives for assistance: Meena Lewellen — Carmel, Carmel Valley, Pebble Beach; Jessica Caird — Pacific Grove, Monterey, Seaside; Jung Yi-Crabbe — Real Estate and Big Sur; Vanessa Jimenez — real estate classifieds; Irma Garcia — legals; Anne Papineau, obits, calendar and Service Directory.

Pages in our print and email editions are identical: Six columns wide and 16 inches high.

We carry special sections throughout the year devoted to various local topics and events, such as the AT&T Pebble Beach Pro-Am, Carmel Bach Festival, Pebble Beach Concours d'Elegance, the Golden Pine Cones, Holiday Guides, In Your Dreams, Healthy Lifestyles and Women in Business. Advertising rates in these special sections are available from our sales reps.

We can also accommodate advertising inserts, within limits for size and weight. For specifics and prices, please contact a sales rep.

Real estate classified ads are priced per word (not counting little bitty words) for the first run, with lower prices for multiple runs. Classified display ads cost $30 per inch. Please contact Vanessa Jimenez for help with your classifieds.

Advertising in our widely read Service Directory costs as little as $25 per week. Ads in our Calendar section cost $25 for 50 words. Anne Papineau can help with both of those.

We are a legally adjudicated newspaper for Monterey County and can run legal ads, which are priced based on the size of the ad and the number of runs required. Irma Garcia will help you with your legal advertising.

Even in a small-town newspaper such as The Carmel Pine Cone, display advertising in print and online is complicated. An account executive will be assigned to help you get your ad ready for reproduction. We use Adobe's professional pre-press applications, including InDesign, Photoshop, Acrobat and Illustrator, to prepare advertising and final pages. Here are a few helpful guidelines:

If you build your own ad, do not use consumer applications or applications which are not suitable for graphic design, such as Word, Powerpoint, PageMaker or Publisher. We strongly recommend you use QuarkXPress or InDesign. Set all your art to 200 dpi, color profile SNAP 2007, and use PostScript or Adobe fonts. If you convert your ad to a pdf, be sure to embed all fonts and use High Quality or Print Ready settings.

If we are building your ad, please submit all elements, such as logos, text and photos, separately. Photos and lineart must be at least 200 dpi.

Remember the old adage, "Fast, cheap, good — pick any two"? Well, that certainly applies to advertising on newsprint. While our email edition offers highly accurate color reproduction, it's important to keep in mind that high-speed web printing is fast, affordable and accommodates late deadlines, but is not 100 percent accurate where color registration and reproduction are concerned. Do not expect colors on newsprint to match exactly what you saw on a computer screen, and avoid using any four-color elements which are essential to your message but are highly detailed or very small. For example, four-color type should be at least 14 point. For more about these very important guidelines for getting the best possible color reproduction on newsprint, click here.

Submit your ad or its elements as email attachments to your ad sales rep.

Our column widths are as follows: one-fourth page (1.5 columns), 2.31 inches; one-third page (two columns), 3.14 inches; one-half page (three columns), 4.79 inches; two-thirds page (four columns), 6.44 inches; three-fourths page (4.5 columns), 7.27 inches; full page (6 columns), 9.75 inches.

Deadlines: Ads for the main news section must be scheduled the Friday before they are to appear, with the ads or their elements due in our office no later than 5 p.m. on Monday. Real Estate ads must be scheduled by Monday noon and are due on Tuesday. Check with your ad sales rep for additional deadline info.

We are very proud of the standing our newspaper enjoys in Carmel and the entire Monterey Peninsula and strive to maintain its credibility, integrity and interest to our readers. If you choose to advertise, you will become part of an essential community resource, with ready access to our extensive, educated and affluent readership. Thank you.

If you have further questions or concerns, you may also bring them to the attention of the Publisher, Paul Miller.
