Dear Readers,
One of Carmel’s ardent preservationists is asking the
city council to stop the planned remodel of the Hofsas
House hotel. Mary Schley reports.
Carmel is seeking changes to a new state law eliminating
parking spaces near crosswalks, while Monterey and
Pacific Grove are trying to comply. Kelly Nix and Mary
Schley have that one.
The Pebble Beach Co. is auctioning off some of the
artworks that have been displayed at the Lodge and other
buildings in years gone by. Chris Counts has the
details.
Monterey is stepping up enforcement of its rental
registry, including fines. A big fundraiser is planned
for the benefit of Big Sur employees who’ve been out of
work while the highway has been closed — even as
tourists are now allowed to join the convoys across the
slide at Rocky Creek. Two 1979 murders in Marina have
been solved, thanks to DNA. Carmel Valley residents
played a key role in the capture of a suspected
kidnapper Wednesday. A dangerous blaze was quickly
extinguished Tuesday near Bottchers Gap, but only after
firefighters took their equipment up an unsafe portion
of Palo Colorado Road. Arroyo Seco Road has reopened
after being closed a year. Monterey County will receive
$168,000 from federal taxpayers to help tighten security
around elections. Sacramento says California’s
population grew last year, and so did Monterey County's.
The Pacific Grove fire station will finally get rid of
its gang showers. Carmel has a classy new hotel — The
Stilwell. A United airlines captain who lives in Pacific
Grove has landed a big promotion and now flies the
airline’s biggest jets on its longest routes. Jerry
Gervase enjoys a tranquil visit to Devendorf Park.
Dennis Taylor says the CHS and Stevenson golf squads are
brimming with optimism heading into the CCS
championship. And my editorial explains why a bunch of
nobodys think they know everything.
