A preview of the April 26, 2024,
edition of The Carmel Pine Cone

April 26 - May 2, 2024

Dear Readers,

Replacing the hundreds of homes destroyed by fires in Monterey County over the last 8 years has been a slow process, at best, the county planning commission was told this week. Chris Counts has the details.

The front entrance of the post office in downtown Carmel has been declared unsafe after a woman driving a Tesla plowed into it on Wednesday. Mary Schley has that one.

A California court says one of the state’s most controversial housing mandates cannot be applied to some cities. Kelly Nix reports.

A man has been convicted of cruelly killing animals being raised by students at a Salinas Valley high school. High winds could delay the reopening of Highway 1 in Big Sur. The hostel in New Monterey has reopened and it looks like a really good deal. A hamburger restaurant at Carmel Plaza has been damaged in a kitchen fire. A senior home in Pacific Grove has come under pointed criticism from the California attorney general. People who oppose the closing of the Pebble Beach equestrian center were told there’s nothing county government can do for them. The Big Sur Marathon will have an out-and-back course on Sunday. A P.G. home that burned and was demolished last year is no longer considered historic (no kidding). There will be a big motorcycle gathering at Quail Lodge this weekend. Our Food and Wine column has tons of great suggestions for where to take Mom on her special day. Dennis Taylor says some of the Peninsula’s best athletes are expecting to do very well in the track postseason. Jerry Gervase pays tribute to the special teachers who made him who he is. Our Healthy Lifestyles special section takes you through the twists and turns of occupational therapy. And my editorial says workers don’t need the government to protect them from their own decisions.
