edition of The Carmel Pine Cone

March 29 - April 4, 2024

Dear Readers,

According to the patrol logs released to the public, Carmel P.D. has very little to do — including quite a few days with no crimes or requests for assistance at all. But that’s not so, says the chief. Mary Schley explains.

A woman who went missing while on a hike in a remote part of Big Sur last week was found dead on Friday at the bottom of a waterfall. Chris Counts reports.

Amid a statewide housing shortage, two Prunedale residents have been charged with renting out substandard and illegal apartments. Kelly Nix has that one.

Jane Goodall, widely regarded as the world's foremost expert in chimpanzees, was in town last week and was treated to a “90-dog salute” on Carmel Beach. Racecar drivers Mario and Michael Andretti are selling their Peninsula gas stations, including the one in downtown Carmel. A new state law requires bars to have test strips available for people who think their drinks might have been spiked. A convicted murderer was among the inmates who attacked three sheriff’s deputies at the county jail last week. More than 50 Carmel employees earned more than $100,000 in 2023. Big tax liens have been placed against the owners of a popular local seafood restaurant. The Pacific Grove City Council decided it’s OK for council members to ask city workers questions. Tiny, exotic sea creatures have been washing up by the millions on local beaches. The board of supervisors may not like Caltrans’ plan to strengthen the side rails on Big Sur bridges, but the highway agency says it will make them anyway. Speed limits have been lowered along more than 40 miles of Highway 1 in Big Sur. PacRep has launched a seat-naming fundraiser to help complete the renovation of the Golden Bough. An off-leash dog haven is now open at Toro Park. A group calling itself Keep Big Sur Wild says there should be a moratorium on new overnight units for visitors. Community Hospital is celebrating its 90th anniversary. Dennis Taylor says that, despite a rocky start, Carmel High’s volleyball team is expecting a great season. Jerry Gervase explains why he finds Easter to be a lot more meaningful than Christmas. Our Healthy Lifestyles special section highlights the dangers diabetes can pose to your oral health, explores the career path that led one local doctor to become an orthodontist, and introduces you to “biofilm.” And my editorial cites yet another episode proving that before you attack someone in print, you might want to do a little research.
