According to the patrol logs released to the public,
Carmel P.D. has very little to do — including quite a
few days with no crimes or requests for assistance at
all. But that’s not so, says the chief. Mary Schley
explains.
A woman who went missing while on a hike in a remote
part of Big Sur last week was found dead on Friday at
the bottom of a waterfall. Chris Counts reports.
Amid a statewide housing shortage, two Prunedale
residents have been charged with renting out substandard
and illegal apartments. Kelly Nix has that one.
Jane Goodall, widely regarded as the world's foremost
expert in chimpanzees, was in town last week and was
treated to a “90-dog salute” on Carmel Beach. Racecar
drivers Mario and Michael Andretti are selling their
Peninsula gas stations, including the one in downtown
Carmel. A new state law requires bars to have test
strips available for people who think their drinks might
have been spiked. A convicted murderer was among the
inmates who attacked three sheriff’s deputies at the
county jail last week. More than 50 Carmel employees
earned more than $100,000 in 2023. Big tax liens have
been placed against the owners of a popular local
seafood restaurant. The Pacific Grove City Council
decided it’s OK for council members to ask city workers
questions. Tiny, exotic sea creatures have been washing
up by the millions on local beaches. The board of
supervisors may not like Caltrans’ plan to strengthen
the side rails on Big Sur bridges, but the highway
agency says it will make them anyway. Speed limits have
been lowered along more than 40 miles of Highway 1 in
Big Sur. PacRep has launched a seat-naming fundraiser to
help complete the renovation of the Golden Bough. An
off-leash dog haven is now open at Toro Park. A group
calling itself Keep Big Sur Wild says there should be a
moratorium on new overnight units for visitors.
Community Hospital is celebrating its 90th anniversary.
