Dear Readers,
Carmel’s far-reaching new housing plan is almost ready
to be implemented. Will the town be the same in 10
years? Mary Schley reports.
The U.S. Navy has announced big plans for what it calls
an “innovation center” at NPS in Monterey. Chris Counts
has that one.
A flood control project at the mouth of Carmel Valley
will pick up $3 million in federal funding. Chris Counts
has that one, too.
Highway 1 to San Luis Obispo County has been closed for
more than a year, and after this winter’s storms, has 3
landslides to clear to get it reopened. The man accused
of assaulting a downtown restaurant owner last year now
claims the incident was the restaurant owner’s fault. A
weekend farmers market may be added to the Carmel
calendar. Bruce Lion will be tried on charges stemming
from two incidents. Yet another classic home will get
the benefits of a Mills Act tax break. A mother is suing
over what she claims was botched birth control surgery.
The Pebble Beach Co. has purchased a Monterey apartment
building it says will be used for employee housing. Was
an “energy services” contract for Pacific Grove schools
approved illegally. Jimmy Panetta and Zoe Lofgren
finished in first place in their respective
congressional primaries. Dennis Taylor says the
Stevenson baseball squad has hopes for an even bigger
season than last year. Jerry Gervase takes a moment to
explain the significance of clocks. Neal Hotelling
delves into the relationship between Julia Morgan and
Phoebe Hearst and explores the great local architecture
that resulted. And my editorial says the California
high-speed rail project is a much bigger boondoggle now
than it was 10 years ago.
