Dear Readers,
Monterey County has released the latest environmental
documents for the plan to protect Scenic Road and
prevent the lagoon from flooding nearby homes — and they
contain some surprises. Chris Counts reports.
In an effort to shore up public opinion for a new police
station in town, city officials are offering a “bad
police station” tour. Mary Schley has the details.
Construction of Phase 2 of the water reclamation project
is getting underway, and water officials say it will go
a long way toward eliminating the Peninsula’s
30-year-old water shortage. Kelly Nix has that one.
Monterey’s rental registry is getting a tepid response
from landlords. Six months after she was injured in an
undisclosed incident Pacific Grove’s police chief
remains on “work at home” status. It took a herculean
effort to rescue an injured woman from the Big Sur
backcountry. The school board voted to sell a Carmel
Valley barn to the county. The latest Big Sur land use
plan from the county includes a ban on short-term
rentals. The man who invaded two local schools and
threatened a principal will be sent to a state mental
hospital instead of being put on trial. Monterey airport
will be getting nonstop flights to Minneapolis. A woman
was seriously injured after off-leash dogs spooked her
horse. Some of Pacific Grove’s parklets will have to go,
the city council decided. Brian Bajari — admired for his
good works and loved for his personal qualities — has
died at 52. Dennis Taylor explains why Stevenson’s water
polo team will be headed to Croatia this summer. Jerry
Gervase goes as crazy as a barrel of monkeys. Our
Healthy Lifestyles special section lays out the
advantages of eating more protein, trying different
cooking methods and taking walks with friends. And my
editorial says last weekend’s San Francisco Chronicle
story about Patrice Pastor was the shoddiest example of
clickbait journalism we’ve ever seen.
