Dear Readers,
The legal battle over the water district takeover of
Cal Am heads to an appeals court, which will consider
whether the water district should be allowed to start
running the water system. Kelly Nix reports.
New CUSD superintendent Sharon Ofek will have a
$285,000-per-year contract, the school board decided.
Mary Schley has that one.
In response to complaints that it moved too slowly after
last week’s storm, a PG&E spokeperson said, “It’s
not just a matter of turning the power back on.” Mary
Schley has that one, as well.
Two new rockslides are blocking the route between Big
Sur Valley and Cambria. A huge tree that crashed onto
the Apple Pie preschool will keep the school closed
indefinitely. The state Fair Political Practices
Commission says members of the Carmel City Council can’t
vote on some proposed Mills Act contracts. A new plan
looks at traffic and parking patterns that will emerge
when the CHS football stadium is used at night. The
drama over a 235-square-foot garage on Santa Fe Street
is finally over. A controversial home on Guadalupe
Street also received its final OK. Rep. Jimmy Panetta
says taxpayers subsidies should be used to bring more
high-speed internet to Big Sur. Costly improvements at
Pacific Grove schools were awarded to a contractor
without going through competitive bids. Students at York
School are headed to the Big Apple for a week of
Broadway Shows and even a performance by the students at
Lincoln Center. Dennis Taylor explains why zeros in the
standings can be really good things. Jerry Gervase has a
permanent cure for the Monday blues. And my editorial
explains what should be done to boost pay for low
skilled workers instead of the $50 minimum wage Barbara
Lee is suggesting.
