Dear Readers,
Dozens of homes and cars were seriously damaged in
Sunday’s big storm, power was out in some cases for
days, more than 8 inches of rain fell, and the final
round of the AT&T Pebble Beach Pro-Am was canceled.
Mary Schley, Kelly Nix and Chris Counts have our
coverage.
The man who squatted at a home in the Carmel Highlands,
stole an Aston Martin, carjacked a fire chief’s personal
vehicle and pled insanity to multiple charges has been
released on bail. Mary Schley has the details.
The winner of the rain-shortened AT&T Pro-Am not
only took home a $3.6 million check, he set an all-time
record for the lowest score at the Pebble Beach Golf
Links. Mary Schley has that one, as well.
The owner of a downtown bar is suing the City of Carmel
for damage to his vintage pickup truck when a tree fell
on it during one of last winter’s storms. Jimmy Panetta
is backing some new restrictions on illegal immigration,
including expedited deportation for DUI. A Carmel
Highlands resident who threw rocks at cars, harassed
employees at a financial services company, and allegedly
committed a host of other offenses has had his bail
revoked and is behind bars. A Seaside man is facing
charges of trying to ambush a police officer. A Monterey
woman admits she stole two dogs. The City of Monterey
may offer help to people who can’t afford the city’s
high rents. Pacific Grove wildly underestimated the cost
of installing some temporary skateboard ramps.
Restaurant owners have mixed feelings about plans to
eliminate parking spaces and move parklets. It may be
the governor’s favorite, but county supervisors aren’t
supporting Prop 1 over concerns it will hurt local
mental health services. The Monterey school district
scored another victory in its attempt to improve the
football field at Monterey High. Lake Nacimiento and
Lake San Antonio need some costly upgrades. In Great
Lives this week, Lisa Lapin profiles a former New York
Times bureau chief who now calls Carmel Valley home.
Dennis Taylor checks in with the CHS wrestling and
basketball teams. Jerry Gervase explains how getting
older can help you understand the significance of
Valentine’s Day. And my editorial says the things that
really make your home important don’t get enough
thought.
