Dear Readers,

The Carmel Police Station is in such bad shape, the best thing to do is tear it down and build a new one, according to a committee of experts. Mary Schley has the story.

The Highway 68 roundabout at the top of Carmel Hill may have worked traffic miracles, but the same thing may not be true of a series of roundabouts proposed for Highway 68 between Monterey and Salinas. Chris Counts has the details.

Another Big Sur campground has sold for millions, raising concerns that big plans may be in store for it. Chris Counts has that story, as well.

The city council wasn’t exactly thrilled with the idea of a Car Week event on Ocean Avenue that would only be open to people who buy tickets. Patrice Pastor has purchased another landmark building in downtown Carmel. Two injured hikers, in separate incidents, needed helicopter rescues from the same Big Sur trail. Candidate forums for the 2024 elections are getting underway. The chamber of commerce would like to share First Murphy House with the Carmel Heritage Society. The assistant city administrator is leaving for a job in Mountain View, and her successor is planning director Brandon Swanson. A former Peninsula resident is in trouble for raking in big refunds by filing fake tax returns. The Monterey County D.A. is warning about scams involving fake rental apartments. Former fire chief Andrew Miller is back — on a temporary basis. The California Attorney General has sued the developer of numerous low-income housing projects, including several in Monterey County. A Seaside man was arrested in Carmel on New Year’s Eve for a “domestic violence incident.” The city council says the embarrassingly rundown Scout House should be moved. The P.B. Co. is partnering with CSUMB to offer hospitality program scholarships. They’ll soon be serving wine again at the city’s Third Thursday events. Dennis Taylor has the outlook for the CHS and Stevenson boys soccer programs. And my editorial says if you want to kill wealth, a “wealth tax” is a good place to start.
