A preview of the December 15, 2023,
edition of The Carmel Pine Cone

December 15 - 21, 2023

Dear Readers,

Heavy equipment was busy this week at Carmel River State Beach trying to make sure that when the Carmel River starts flowing to sea during this winter’s storms, it won’t do so at the north end of the beach right next to Scenic Road. Chris Counts reports.

The new lights at the Carmel High School football stadium passed their “dark sky” test, the school district says. Mary Schley has that one.

Caltrans says Highway 1 all the way to Cambria won’t reopen until next Spring, at the earliest, making this closure of the world-famous highway one of the longest on record. Chris Counts has that story, as well.

The Carmel Planning Commission gave a favorable reception to plans for a complete re-do of the Hofsas House inn. Former city attorney, county judge and Big Sur Marathon founder Bill Burleigh has died at 89. Another lawsuit claiming sexual harassment has been filed against CUSD. Two young women have been arrested in connection with what police say was an attempted murder at Lovers Point. The man who trespassed at two schools and threatened a principal will undergo a psychiatric examination. A Monterey man has been charged with a hate crime for vandalizing a car he allegedly believed belonged to a Muslim. Monterey County has released the EIR for a proposed ordinance regulating short-term rentals. A noteworthy house on Scenic Road that had to be rebuilt after a major is being offered for $9 million. Wildfire prevention work is underway in the mountains between Big Sur and Carmel Valley. A business near Point Lobos has become the go-to source for living Christmas trees. In our Great Lives column this week, Lisa Watson profiles the founder of Hidden Valley Music Seminars. Dennis Taylor has the story of the ambitions of Santa Catalina basketball team. Jerry Gervase recalls the things he learned from his father — including what to do, and what not to do. And my editorial says lounging hippies were the reason the City of Carmel was reprimanded in the early 1970s by the California Supreme Court.
