Dear Readers,
Monterey County supervisors unanimously rejected
Caltrans’ plan for new guardrails on the Garrapata
Bridge — a major victory for people who say they prefer
the old ones. Chris Counts reports.
The Carmel City Council can’t decide what to do about
cleanup rules on the beach — should they adopt the
strict codes ordained by the state and the feds, or
would something a little more permissive be appropriate?
Mary Schley has the details.
Speaking of can’t decide, the council also put off the
question of whether Patrice Pastor should get a tax
break for restoring and preserving the city’s most
famous home. Mary Schley reports that story, as well.
Big Sur should not have any more hotel rooms, a
conservation group says, but the county may disagree. A
major re-do of the Hofsas House hotel is set to be
considered by the planning commission. A man has been
arrested for allegedly making off with cash from a
downtown hotel. Pacific Grove police say they’ve
arrested two men for trying to murder someone at Lovers
Point, but they won’t say who they are. A former
Congressional candidate is facing charges in a dispute
over a pro-Gaza message on a Sand City “billboard.” A
resident of the Highlands has been hit with a
restraining order and criminal charges after a bizarre
series of events. The former city manager of P.G. may go
to work for Cal Am. While Carmel dithers about giving a
tax break to the owner of the Frank Lloyd Wright house,
a Pebble Beach homeowner had no trouble getting one for
his architecturally significant residence. After a
hiatus for several years, the Foragers Festival returns.
If you would like to adopt a bunny, a rescue group at
the Barnyard is ready to assist. Dennis Taylor diagrams
the high hopes for the Stevenson basketball squad. Neal
Hotelling charts the 19th century real estate schemes
for some of the Peninsula’s most valuable property.
Jerry Gervase explains why he talks to his books. Our
special section, “Holiday Guide,” fills your stocking
with ideas about local holiday events and unique gift
ideas. And my editorial says the city council is
overlooking the big picture when it comes to how much
money they get to spend.
