Dear Readers,
The man who created a security scare when he walked
unchallenged into Pacific Grove high school and middle
school earlier this month has a lengthy criminal record,
court records show. And now he’s been charged with
threatening a school official, too. Kelly Nix and Mary
Schley report.
A group of poachers were caught in a nighttime abalone
harvest near the Highlands last week. Chris Counts has
that one.
The Monterey County Sheriff’s Office got a unanimous
approval from the board of supervisors for its
military-type hardware shopping list. Chris Counts has
that story, as well.
A stained-glass repair project at All Saints’ church
uncovered some very interesting history. A former inn
has been sold for $11 million after being converted to a
private home. The man arrested in a double homicide at a
bar in Pajaro last week was acting in self-defense, the
D.A. says. Big Sur’s Pico Blanco Boy Scout camp has been
sold to a leadership group. A woman who was arrested for
defying a closure order on Carmel Beach during the
pandemic is pursuing what she hopes will be a big-money
lawsuit, and there’s another suit over profits from one
of the Ocean Avenue skincare shops. Plans for a new
sewer line in portions of the Carmel Highlands are
drawing heated opposition. Residents say delivery
drivers are using city streets when they’re not supposed
to. There’s a big new mural at the MIIS campus in
downtown Monterey. This year’s Christmas Tree and
Menorah lightings in downtown Carmel are Friday night.
Neal Hotelling has the fascinating history of the line
between two ranchos and the role it played in the
development of local cities. Dennis Taylor says this
year’s CHS basketball team could be the best ever. Jerry
Gervase explains why he envies people who’ve lived in
the same town their whole lives. And my editorial asks,
why fiddle over a 250-square-foot garage while the city
burns?
