Dear Readers,
After hearing impassioned comments on both sides of the
no-home-addresses debate, the city council decided to
put the topic off and refer it to a subcommittee for
more discussion. Mary Schley reports.
Monterey Peninsula College has appointed a director of
“Inclusivity, Diversity, Equity, Anti-Racism and
Accessibility,” but did not say what problems at the
campus made the department necessary. Kelly Nix has the
story.
Highway 68 between Monterey and Salinas is beset with
regular traffic jams, but relief may be on the way in
the form of 9 roundabouts. Chris Counts has the details.
A Carmel Valley artist’s shell lamp has been added to
the décor at Disneyland’s Adventureland Tree House. The
Carmel Foundation has acquired the former Red Cross
building on Dolores Street. $27 million in upgrades make
the sewage treatment plant near the Carmel River safer
and more reliable, its general manager says. County
supervisors are trying to decide whether the sheriff’s
office needs more public oversight. Three men are under
arrest for staging an armed robbery of Macy’s at Del
Monte shopping center. The county health department is
making public a list of licensed tattoo, body piercing
and “branding” establishments. The planning department
is developing rules to manage the city’s proliferating
ADU’s. Questions are being asked about why the Pacific
Grove Youth Center isn’t being used more. Additional
protection is being urged for the Great Tide Pool. With
Veterans Day in the offing, the county board of
supervisors took time to honor local vets. A Salinas
Church will host a fundraiser for victims of the Lahaina
wildfire. The CHS football team is unbeaten heading into
the playoffs, where some tough competition awaits. Neal
Hotelling delves into a new book about an obscure era in
the history of the Monterey Peninsula. Our special
section, “Peninsula Businesses,” profiles local success
stories, including a realtor who tells how having a
world famous grandmother affected his career, a senior
citizens complex that tackled its own old age, and how
wine in a can came to be. Jerry Gervase says
Thanksgiving would be more meaningful — and more fun —
if it wasn’t at Thanksgiving. And my editorial says it’s
time for the no-home-addresses controversy to be put to
bed.
