edition of The Carmel Pine Cone

October 27 - November 2, 2023

Dear Readers,

Former police chief Paul Tomasi is returning to the force, bringing what’s hoped will be some longterm stability to Carmel PD. Mary Schley reports.

The Monterey County Board of Supervisors again failed to approve a pro-Israel resolution — this time for good, and with Mary Adams, Wendy Askew and Glenn Church voting no. Kelly Nix has that one.

At a town hall meeting Monday night, Sen. John Laird and Assemblywoman Dawn Addis said politicians from San Francisco and Los Angeles are responsible for the one-size-fits-all housing mandates that face Carmel and other small communities.

The forest and beach commission has been debating rules for how the beach should be cleaned — and whether it should be done at all. CHOMP failed to convince a judge to overturn a $9.5 million jury award in a case where a cardiac care supervisor at the hospital claimed he was illegally fired. Construction is underway for a new hotel in downtown Pacific Grove. After a recent city council meeting was disrupted by racist comments from anonymous participants over Zoom, the P.G. council has decided to ban comments from people participating remotely. A shelter for homeless women and families will open next week in Monterey. The popular owners of a jewelry store on Dolores Street — Jason and Marijane Johnson — died 6 months apart, and both from cancer. A major redevelopment plan for the Hofsas House hotel got a favorable reception at a community meeting last week. On Wednesday the county OK’d the design for the entrance to the 95-unit housing complex at September Ranch. A remarkable variety of Halloween happenings are planned around the Peninsula this weekend. Dennis Taylor says high school athletes in several sports are plotting paths to victory in the fall playoffs. Neal Hotelling explains what happened when the first printing press started operating in California in the 1830s. Jerry Gervase wonders what it would have been like if modern-era journalists had been there to report happenings in the Bible. Winners of this year’s Golden Pine Cones are unveiled in our 52-page special section. And my editorial says the “tyranny of the majority” can be a real problem when the majority starts acting like they know everything.
