Dear Readers,
The water management district has set a vote to decide
if it will use eminent domain to take over Cal Am water.
Kelly Nix has the story.
The historic resources board said it was OK for Patrice
Pastor to move a section of a 1970s-era rock wall to
make way for a mixed-use development on Dolores Street,
but this week the city council reversed that decision.
Mary Schley has the details.
Marina officials say crime skyrocketed when one of the
town’s inns was converted to a homeless shelter. Kelly
Nix has that one, too.
Work on busy Highway 68 between Highway 1 and Pacific
Grove will continue until almost the end of the year,
Caltrans said. The Monterey fairgrounds — famous for
hosting some of rock’s biggest stars in the 1960s — is
long overdue for some upgrades. The Carmel City Council
approved a tough new ordinance on cell phone antennas.
The Red Cross will sell its downtown Carmel HQ, raising
the possibility the building will be turned back into a
home. A plan from the Pine Inn to turn its parking lot
into a building with guest rooms and parking got a
lukewarm reception at city hall. The Pebble Beach Co. is
planning what it calls a “refresh” of the Spanish Bay
golf course. Plans to rebuild Highway 1 after storm
damage in southern Monterey County last winter have been
revised. The Carmel River is posing a new erosion threat
to Scenic Road. Short-term rentals have been approved
for a property near Point Lobos. The city wants to know
what you thought about Car Week’s events in downtown
Carmel. Local realtors, including Jeff Davi, have
purchased the Keller Williams franchise. The Carl Cherry
Center is celebrating its 75th birthday. Dennis Taylor
says things are looking good for the girls water polo
programs at Peninsula high schools. Neal Hotelling
explains why Bob Hope thought the Peninsula was perfect
for movies, as well as for golf. Jerry Gervase says it’s
much too early to stop reading printed books. Our Pet
Talk special section is packed with features explaining
why you love your best friends so much. And my editorial
tries to explain what it means when Cal Am says it’s not
for sale.
